KENSEIKAN Dojo Introduction
THE PHILOSOPHY BEHIND UEDA KENSEIKAN DOJO
“Kenseikan,” transliterating from Japanese into “a place for healthy living,” aims to provide a place, not just to train karate, but to train the spirit and mind. It is a karate dojo for people of all ages, genders, backgrounds, and all walks of life and a community that supports one another in improving our skills and achieving our own personal goals, such as obtaining a black belt or winning a tournament. We place value in nurturing supportive, meaningful relationships with our dojo-mates and creating a healthy, constructive environment to mutually grow, while maintaining a sense of gratitude toward everyone in our lives, especially parents and teachers, who support us every day in our endeavors.
Every student sets their own goals, but here are a few examples:
To train a strong body, mind, and spirit
To become a competitive athlete and win in tournaments
(Ueda Shihan, who is also an active competitor, personally coaches each student in basics, kata, and kumite, using methods tailored to each individual student.)
To continue competitive or recreational training, even as a working adult
To develop the physical strength and mental resilience to overcome personal obstacles.

The Japan Karate Association, which embodies traditional Japanese Shotokan karate
The karate practiced at Ueda Dojo is Shotokan karate.
It is based on the techniques and teachings of Gichin Funakoshi, who first introduced karate from Okinawa to mainland Japan in 1923. It is one of the largest schools of non-contact traditional karate in the world. The Japan Karate Association is the only public interest incorporated association in Japan certified by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology to promote traditional karate.
